Don’t Forget the Bells and Whistles

Alexander Graham Bell is well-known for his invention of the Telephone. You’d be surprised to know that the idea behind Bell’s invention was sparked by his desire to effectively communicate with his hearing-impaired mother. Bell was a problem solver and an innovator by nature and his unwavering pursuit to find a solution to his problem led to the invention of the “electronic speech machine”, which later adopted the name telephone.

Even though technology has advanced in leaps and bounds and more of us have moved away from using fixed lines to mobile phones, most millennials and earlier generations have had first-hand experience using the age-old telephone and I’m sure we each have fond memories of being able to reconnect with loved ones who were miles away. Bell was a forward thinker, and no dream was too big for him to achieve. His lifelong ambition for the telephone was to make sure that there would be a telephone in every American town by the turn of the 21st century.

Bell did more than reach his goal, his invention went on to be modified and improved to the point where his initial design was transformed into the modern-day cell phone. Most would argue that Bell went from wanting to have his invention in every home in America, to having his invention in almost every person's pocket across the world.

“Phones” as we now call them, can do more than just call someone thousands of miles away at the tap of a few buttons, we can now use them to buy a plane ticket to any destination, order food, or even binge-watch an entire season of your favourite series.

Although other inventors have contributed to the advancement of the telephone and all its new features, one thing that we cannot overlook is Alexander Bell’s determination, tenacious appetite for innovation, and courage to journey into the unknown. Bell was not the only one who had the idea of transferring sound via an electric current. His ingenuity, step-wise refinement, and long hours spent perfecting his invention led to his success, making him a household name.
